Greek Flag Raising Ceremony @ Toronto City Hall – May 19, 2017

Dear friends, thank you for participating to the Flag Raising Ceremony in honour and remembrance of the Hellenic, Australian, British and New Zealand troops and the men and women of Crete who took part in the “Battle of Crete” in WWII and sacrificed their lives for freedom and democracy.

The event was organized by the Hellenic Canadian Federation of Ontario Charitable and Educational Foundation, the Canadian Hellenic Congress and the Hellenic Canadian Congress of Ontario in conjunction with Councillor Mary Frangedakis and Councillor Jim Karygiannis.

At the same time, May 19 was the remembrance day of the Hellenic Pontian Genocide. During WWI and its aftermath (1914–22), Kemal and his neoturks started the systematic genocide of the Pontian Greek population from its historic homeland.

On May 4, 2016, the Toronto City Council passed a motion presented by Councillors Jim Karygiannis and Mary Frangedakis to recognize the Greek Pontian Genocide and to honour the memory of the men, women and children who died.
